We don’t have enough storage…
Renewable energy contributes approximately 40% to power generation in the UK. However, the technology's intermittency and weather dependence continue to raise reliability concerns and leave the UK dependent on fossil fuels. Progress has been slow in developing storage and grid technologies critical to a resilient, sustainable energy system. This issue is illustrated by wind curtailment, which cost the industry a record £507M in 2021. Enough wasted energy to power 800K UK homes in 2020/2021 and added an estimated £663M to energy bills. Without viable solutions, industry and stakeholders will continue to be impacted by rising energy prices. In the long term, the inability to maximise weather dependent renewable energy, insufficient network infrastructure, and growing reliance on electricity to power vehicles and heating could overload the national grid and threaten the sustainability and profitability of the energy industry.
Whilst the UK is doing amazing things in the renewable energy sector - we have the worlds largest off-shore wind farms and more in planning, we don’t have enough storage and infrastructure in place to be able to take full advantage of this energy supply.
The fact is that whilst renewable energy is well positioned in huge centralised locations, energy storage will be significantly assisted in a distributed system. If every household were able to store the surplus green electricity produced when the wind is blowing hard or the sun is shining, they could then use that stored electricity when demand is higher and the renewables possibly can’t cover the need. Two exciting things happen here, the first is significantly reduced bills for the consumer, the other is helping the grid, by flattening the peaks and troughs of demand.
To address these issues, ESME is developing its Home Energy Storage Solution, which enables distributed electricity storage to meet user needs and help reduce peak demands. ESME can shift over 95% of a user's energy consumption to low-demand periods, thereby enabling 100% utilisation of all renewable energy before resorting to fossil fuels. ESME's solution offers immediate cost savings of 70% and a potential 200% ROI within a 10-year ownership period. It empowers customers to actively contribute to a renewable energy solution and address the climate crisis.
